The 258 Mile Challenge

Rachel Webster
British Army Veteran:

As we approach the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, Rachel Webster wanted to push herself further than she has ever been before; she has decided to run a total of 258 miles over a number of days at the end of May. She intends to mix both her passion and her desire for running to remember those fallen 40 years ago.

She has been running for many years now, and it has not only helped her with her own mental struggles but has given her such a rewarding sense of achievement, in fact, something she had never thought possible.

Running gives Rachel a routine and gives her a reason to get out of bed in the morning and it gives her a sense of purpose.

Rachel is a veteran, she served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, she feels it is important for her to give back and remember those who we have lost from all wars. So she will run 255 miles for each serving member lost in the Falklands, as well as 3 miles for the civilian casualties. It does sounds impossible, but with the right frame of mind (and plenty of training), anything is possible.

Rachel will be raising money for The Not Forgotten Association which has been proudly supporting our Armed Forces since 1920, providing events for wounded serving personnel and disabled veteran, it aims improve physical and mental health, address isolation and loneliness, and promote a sense of community and balance.

10% of funds raised will also go towards The Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the Chelsea Pensioners

Rachel has planned this undertaking with her good friend Bob Darby, he is a veteran of the Falklands War, he served in The 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment and took part in the battle for Mount Longdon and is an avid supporter of fundraising for The Not Forgotten Association, and in 2018 he took a group of veterans to revisit the Falklands. He will also be providing logistical and moral support for Rachel’s endeavour.

There will be opportunities to join Rachel on her challenge; you can run a mile with her or to stop for a chat along the route. She would like to meet as many veterans, or families of those who fell during the conflict, to hear your stories and to raise the importance of talking about mental health and war. You can also follow Rachel on her training journey here.

Please share amongst your networks and help her smash the 4K target.
